Fashion and style are very often used interchangeably. However, they are so very different.
Fashion is external; style is internal
Fashion is all about the clothes and the current trends. It is about what is currently popular and what is selling at the moment.
However, style is all about you and your personality. It’s about what is inside of you and how you express it in your total appearance, your voice, your posture, your words. Style is very personal.
Fashion fades; style is eternal
Yves Saint Laurent famously said
“Fashion fades, style is eternal.”
I usually think of fashion the same as a trend. One season a trend may be in and the next season it’s out. If you follow the trends then you are being fashionable. It also means you will change when the fashion changes.
Your style may or may not change over time. It depends on you. Some women keep the same personal style for years. Others may change as they go through phases of their life and their roles change. For instance, I had a very classic style with hints of creative when I was working. Now, my style is natural with much more creativity than I had previously. I can be more edgy and experiment more more now that I am retired.
Fashion detracts; style enhances
Fashion focuses on the clothing. It detracts attention away from ourselves. Some people may want this.\
On the other hand, style brings attention directly to ourselves and can enhance the messages we want to send to the outside world. It helps tell the story we want told.
Clothing or you?
In summary, what will it be for you?
Do you choose fashion? Do you want to put the emphasis on the clothes in order to hide your true self?
Or do you choose style? Do you want to use your clothes and your external appearance to enhance the messages you are sending and the imprint you leave on others?
What is your choice?
