Do the Fall Closet Cleanse Now!
I know we are in the dog days of summer, but from now to Labor Day many of us think about fall and back to school. I’m already starting to see a lot of fall styles being featured online and in the stores.
Before you get too focused on fall and the new styles, this is a great opportunity to do some cleansing of your summer closet. You’ve now had at least 4-5 months of these spring/summer clothes so you should be very familiar with what you’ve worn and what is still hanging in the back of your closet never touched.
First, if this job is too overwhelming for you to do by yourself and you want an expert to help, just give me a call. By the way, I’m running a special just for you!

Step #1: Get An Attitude
To do any type of cleansing you’ve got to get yourself in the right frame of mind. Make sure you set aside time where you will not be distracted – yes, this means put away your phone! Make sure you’ve eaten and have something to drink. Now, this is important – put on some upbeat music – Music to get you going and moving. How about the Rocky theme! Get yourself in this state of mind:
I don’t have time to waste so I have to make decisions quickly!
You want to make decisions fast and not linger over any item of clothing. Over-thinking is the kiss of death when you are trying to get rid of clothes. Trust me – I know from years of experience!
Step #2: Make “Goodbye” and “Keep” Piles
Locate storage bins, bags, or just areas in your room for these 5 piles. Notice I put the “Goodbye” piles first.
Goodbye – Charity
These are the clothes that you will clean and give to charity. For tips on how to donate clothes, click here.
Goodbye – Consignment
You only need this pile if you want to consign some of your clothes. Warning: Most consignment shops will only take in-season clothes so you may have to store for a few months. Click here for tips on how to consign. If you have designer clothes but don’t have a designer consignment shop near you, try My Sister’s Closet. This shop takes clothes from all over the country and even provides a free shipping kit.
Goodbye – Recycling
You may or may not need this pile. But if you do, do not throw worn or torn clothes in the trash. Bag them up and take to a donation or recycling center.
Keep I Love – Return to Closet
Clothes that you absolutely love and will continue wearing until the end of the warm weather. This pile can also include those items you wear year-round.
Keep I Love – Store for Next Year
These are the clothes you absolutely love but will not wear for the rest of the season. Why not start right now to clean these and get them stored for next year. This frees up space in your closet so you can, little by little, start taking your fall items out of storage.
Step #3: GoodBye, Goodbye, and Finally Goodbye!
Now you are ready for the work. I’ve created this graphic to help you make the best decisions. Take a deep breathe and plunge right into it!
The “Goodbyes” – resist looking at these clothes or feeling sad – especially as most of them will go to charity, think of this as a very good deed. Well done!
The “Keeps” – these are the clothes that make you feel good and look good. For those items going to storage – make sure they are clean and you store them appropriately. Here is a great article to read if you have questions on how to store clothing
For those summer items you still need to wear, don’t put them back in the closet yet. Take this time to clean your closet thoroughly while it is empty. Then put the few items back in it.
So, now you have done the difficult work of purging your spring/summer wardrobe and are ready when you want to start getting out your fall items!
The key now is to only buy the clothes that make you feel great and look great!
Now, if this all sounds too overwhelming for you and you need help just give me a call.
