One of the most important pieces of developing a personal style is knowing your Style Personality. In fact, I’ll venture to say it is the most important component.
Your Style Personality is an expression of your personality. It’s about YOU! Your clothes and your total appearance tell Your Story to the world. Style is not a prescription given to you by a stylist. A stylist can help you discover your style but they can’t tell you what style relates to you. That’s why so many makeovers don’t work – they are more an expression of fashion or the stylist vision for you rather than your own vision.
That’s why I love the Style Coaching™ philosophy. In Style Coaching™, we believe that true style comes from the combination of inner and outer confidence. You can’t have style with low self-esteem. Neither can you “be the best you can be” if you have poor posture, a chaotic wardrobe or excess stress!
Style Personality – Inside Out Discovery
Discovering your Style Personality is an Inside Out process. I always start with my clients by asking these questions “What few words do you want people to think of when they first meet you? What is the story you want told?” Once you truly know what messages you want to send, then you can choose clothes, colors, accessories, and a hairstyle that makes you feel good and gives you confidence. You can find inspiration from the latest fashion trends but it’s important for you to feel comfortable in your outfit. And your outfit needs to be in harmony with your personality and not that of someone else.
Style Personality – Categories
What types of clothes are you comfortable wearing? Do you like classic lines, tailored styles, sophisticated looks? Do you like ruffles, lace, pastel colors, delicate jewelry? Or do you think dressing is an art form and you want to make a bold statement with your clothing?
Most women primarily fall into one of five Style Personality categories – Romantic, Classic, Dramatic, Creative, or Natural. Some women are 99% one Style Personality and other women may have a primary and one or two secondary personalities. In fact, you may flow between categories depending on your mood.
My Style Personality
My style personality is mainly Romantic with equal amounts of Creative and Dramatic influences. I like ruffles, bows, flowers, yet I don’t like to look too “frilly”. I like to accessorize with a scarf but it has to have some interesting twist or uniqueness to it. I like to add a bit of an “edge”. I don’t want to stand out too much in a crowd and, yet, I don’t mind if someone pays me a compliment. The styles I like have changed over the years as I’ve changed my lifestyle, lived in different locations/countries, and I’ve matured. Oh, by the way, just because you’re mature does not mean you can’t have style. I have more style now then I did in my 30s and 40s! Don’t you know – fabulous 50s and stylish 60s!
