How to Dress the Oval Body Type
This is the 5th in a series of posts on how to dress your body type. Today I’m focusing on the oval body type.
If you missed some of the past articles here they are:
Oval Body Type
The oval, apple, or round body type is the least common. You are an oval type if your mid section is wider than your shoulders and hips. This shape forms mainly in post-menopausal women due to the drop in estrogen levels which causes fat to be stored in a woman’s stomach instead of her hips.
You are an oval body type if your measurements show these results:
- You have balanced hips & shoulders and no definition at the waist
- You tend to carry your weight around your tummy and upper body
- You have an average to generous bust
- You have shapely legs
Basically, if you feel that you carry most of your waist around the midriff and bust then you are an oval body type. It is common for a rectangle to turn into an oval body type as they grow older.
Style Tips for the Oval Body Type
The style tips for the oval are similar to the rectangle – trim and define your waist. But if you carry extra weight around the midriff (which most ovals do) the goal is to skim over that area. That’s why structured garments are your best bet – simply, because they hold in and camouflage the extra weight.
The next most important style tip is to draw attention to your best parts which are usually your breast and legs.
You should avoid…
- Any clothes that add bulk to your look
- Clothes that hang from your widest part or cut across the widest part
- High neck tops as these make your top look bigger
- Skirts that are baggy, pleated or have excess fabric
- Animal prints, large prints and horizontal lines
- Chunky heavy knits as they add inches and don’t create good shapes
Here are some styles that are perfect for the oval body type.
Celebrity Oval Body Types – Some Surprises!
It is interesting how many celebrities have an oval/apple body type. As you would expect, Oprah Winfrey and Melissa McCarthy are ovals. Drew Barrymore and Kate Winslet are also oval types but did you expect Angelina Jolie actually is an oval shape? Sometimes you really can’t tell the shapes of celebrities as their stylists are all very good at enhancing whatever type they are!
