How to Dress the Triangle (Pear) Body Type

June 23, 2016 By Kathleen Kostrzewa 2 Comments

How to Dress the Triangle Body Type

Recently I talked about how to determine your body type (click here) and the five general horizontal body shapes for women.  This article will focus on the triangle body type and provide tips on how to dress this type to achieve more balanced proportions.

Remember – these are only styling tips.  No matter what you wear –  you need to choose clothing that makes you feel good and boosts your confidence.

Triangle Body Type

The triangle (pear) is a common body type for women.  You are a triangle if your measurements show these results:

The Triangle Figure (slender)

  • Shoulders are narrower than hips
  • Larger size on bottom than top
  • Fuller hips, bottom and thighs
  • Slender upper body

The Triangle Figure (full)

  • Same as slender triangle but fuller around middle
  • Usually has shorter waist
  • Noticeable “saddle bags”
  • Bigger bottom

Style Tips

To balance out your proportions, you want to create width in your upper body to balance the lower half.  Here are the simple guidelines.

Style Tips for TriangleAvoid clothes that…

  • Add bulk to the larger bottom half
  • Are too tight or clingy
  • Have horizontal detailing on the bottom half
  • Skinny fitting, single layered tops as they make the top half look out of proportion
  • Shoulder bags that rest at the hips

Below is a good look for a smart casual work outfit.

Triangle Shape - Work Wear

The horizontal detail on the top draws the eye upward and horizontally which gives the illusion of wider shoulders.  The bottom half is not of interest, so our eyes don’t linger or focus on the bottom.  The flares create a long line and our eyes read this as slimming and elongating.  Also, the flares at the bottom balance out the wider hip area.  The heels also are good for elongating.  Skinny straps on sandals are ok to wear but don’t wear wider straps as these will add width.  You want to elongate and slim your bottom half.

Here is a cocktail look.

Triangle Shape - Cocktail Dress

Again, the neckline creates a long horizontal line which causes our eyes to go back and forth and widens the shoulders.  The statement necklace adds detail and focuses eyes upward.  The folds of the dress create vertical lines which, again, elongate the look.

Highlight What Makes You Feel Confident & Beautiful

Over the past few years, the triangle body type has been popularized by many celebrities such as Beyonce, Jennifer Lopez, and Kim Kardashian.  Having a big “booty” seems to be more ideal now than it was years ago.  These women are very proud of their bigger bottoms.  If you love your curves and want to emphasize them, then just do the opposite and bring the spotlight to your lower body.  Simple!

This is a good reminder that the “ideal” body type changes over time.  It’s also a reminder that what you may perceive to be a flaw can be your biggest asset.  Don’t hide it, be proud of it.

And, remember, I have provided you some styling tips – not hard fast rules.   The most important tip I can give is to always wear clothes that make you feel good and that send the messages you want sent.   You will be the most beautiful when you feel good on the inside and wear your clothes with confidence!

I'm so glad I found Kathy! I was tired of looking at a closet full of black, shapeless clothes. Even with a closet full of clothes I was never satisfied with the way I looked. I knew women that looked great no matter the occasion, and I wanted to know their secret. A friend recommended I meet Kathy and I'm so glad I did.Kathy helped me identify my personal style and provided very practical strategies for building a wardrobe that worked for me. I started making changes right away. Using Kathy's advice I'm shopping smarter. I know which colors which colors are most flattering on me and how to dress for my shape. I'm clearing my closet of clothes that don't work for me. It's a great feeling! Getting ready in the morning is so much easier! I would definitely recommend Kathy to anyone who wants to look and feel their best!

Absolutely a must have service for all women!
I had been dreaming about hiring a personal stylist for years and last month actually made it a reality. Right from the start I was extremely impressed with Kathy's knowledge, follow-up and dedication to my needs (and timeline). I wanted a sounding board...confidence booster...and most of all, honest feedback on what my current style/dress was saying about me. Although I do not think I am superficial...our body language, posture and dress says a lot about 'us'. After staying home with my son for almost 2 years I knew I had to take charge of my closet. Kathy's approach to style is very scientific. Through conversations, quizzes and color analysis we determined the look that I not only LOVED but fit into my budget AND lifestyle. During the day I am speaking clinically to professionals, possibly dancing some zumba in the early evening and playing with Thomas the Train Bath Toys before dinner...needless to say I not only wanted but NEEDED a flexible and manageable wardrobe. Whether you meet with Kathy for an hour or sign-up for her full service boutique experience, she is well worth every penny. Not only is she fashionable and trendy she knows a good bargain when she sees one. This small investment in your personal style and wardrobe is insignificant in the amount of money Kathy will save you. She continues to send me 'great looks' and hot sale items that are just too good to pass up. I am a "Effortless Style" client for life. Thank you for polishing my look and giving me the extra boost of confidence I needed as I re-enter the work force.

Kathy's background as a former corporate professional, along with her love and natural ability for styling, lends itself perfectly to her holistic approach to style coaching. How we feel about ourselves on the inside is every bit as important as how we look on the outside. When you feel confident you exude confidence. After all, confidence is a key ingredient to true style. Work with Kathy--you will feel like your whole self is being treated to a style makeover!

I started working with Kathleen Kostrzewa in the fall of 2014.   It happened to be at the time of my life when I wanted to move forward and make some changes.  Kathleen encouraged me to set some time limitations and set some attainable goals. This turned into some very positive outcomes.  She helped me to understand that I was not an unusual individual walking in a the same avenue many women my age are.  I respect her timeliness and patience and also her effort in making a difference in women's lives.

    Mother/Pilates Instructor & Manager, 30's; California

Kathy was incredible at helping me reorganize not only my closet but my life. After the birth of my daughter, my house and life felt like it got turned upside down. I was definitely the last one on the list. With Kathy's guidance I was able to address so many things that had been pushed to the side. She is incredibly understanding and a great listener. She helped me find what was important in my life to help boost my self confidence. She help me create realistic, attainable goals in my hectic life. I suddenly could fit myself back into my life and it feels amazing. Kathy also helped me declutter and organize my wardrobe so I can choose outfits that make me feel and look good! I was so tired of feeling like a constant napkin for my toddler! She's given me simple but incredibly effective tips to help this tired momma look and feel rejuvenated, refreshed, and energetic again. My time with Kathy has been a game changer for me and my family.

Kathleen was very helpful and encouraging as we went through an analysis of my style and colors. We also did some shopping where we discussed which clothing styles work best with my body type. Kathleen was very easy and fun to work with and made me comfortable right away even though I was a bit self-conscious at first. She has a great sense of humor that mixes just right with a professional approach to helping women with little things that make a big difference in self-esteem and self-perception. I highly recommend her to women of all ages to get a very helpful, objective, and scientific boost. I'm very happy with her help and plan to check back in periodically to make sure I'm on track!
