One of the biggest style mistakes you can make as a mature woman is to wear ill-fitting or baggy clothes. You may want to cover up perceived flaws with your body so you tend to buy tops or bottoms that are ill-fitting or have a lot of volume thinking this will camouflage your stomach or hide those few extra pounds. Instead, this only makes you look bigger, older, and frumpy!
The first thing to understand is that what you perceive as flaws may only be noticed by you! Instead of dressing to hide your flaws, focus on your best assets and dress to highlight those parts. Turn your focus from the negative to the positive. First and foremost, love your own beautiful unique body shape.
Next, don’t make the mistake of thinking that wearing big, baggy styles will make you appear slimmer. Certain clothes can have the opposite effect and “pile on the pounds”. And make you look very frumpy!
The fit of your clothes is key.
Clothes should skim your body – not too tight, not too loose. Choose fabrics that don’t cling and avoid stiff or bulky textures. And above all, wear the right foundations! This is essential.
Dress your way to a slimmer self.
Dressing your way to a slimmer self is the quickest way to feel great about your body shape. It’s all about using the rules of optical illusions, balancing proportions, and focusing the eye to make you appear slimmer and younger. I’ve already written about how you can trick the eye using vertical and horizontal lines (stripes) and now I’ll describe how to balance “volume” and use structure in your clothing to make you appear slimmer.
The “Volume” Rule
Remember, too much fabric or voluminous clothing will make you look larger. However, you can wear clothing with volume if you remember that you can only wear 1 voluminous garment at a time. In general, a flowing top calls for a fitted bottom garment and a fitted top can be paired with looser fitting bottoms.
The “Structure” Rule
Some part of your outfit has to be “structured”. Structured clothing creates a long lean line. Here are examples of looks using me as the model.
#1 – Shapeless unstructured silhouette. Makes me look old & frumpy
#2 – Adding jacket is better but not by much.
#3 – Wearing slimmer bottoms with an unstructured top is OK but sleeves need to be shortened and neck open to slim the look more.
#4 – I opened the neck a bit and added the jacket to create additional vertical lines that slim.
#5 – I opened the neckline even more and added a belt creating more structure. Then I added a higher heel which creates more balance. If the jacket were a bit shorter it would be even better. Adding accessories would make a fabulous look!
If you’re a mature woman and you dress in baggy, loose fitting clothes you will look bigger, older, and frumpy!
- No matter what – love your unique body shape!
- Your clothes must fit well.
- Wear only 1 voluminous garment at a time.
- Create outfits that have structure.
