I started this article by going through my wardrobe looking for yellow. I only found one pair of denim pants and one sweater set. I couldn’t believe that was all the yellow clothing I have! I then searched online and found that many stores don’t even list the color yellow as a filter. Club Monaco has 14-16 different color filters for women’s dresses, shirts, and skirts and no yellow!
Here are a few facts about this loved but little used color:
- In almost every culture, yellow represents sunshine, happiness, and warmth.
- It’s the color of traffic lights and signs indicating caution all over the world. This is mainly because yellow is the most visible color of the spectrum and the human eye processes it first over any other color even red! Think taxi cabs, school buses, and caution tape.
- Although over 80% of people around the globe say that yellow is the color of happiness, the color is not used often in our daily lives. Do you ever see many kitchen appliances or electronic devices in yellow?
I once read that post-it notes were yellow because pastel yellow has been found to aid memory. Although the color may aid memory that is not the real reason for the color of the post-it notes. Read here for the truth!
Yellow is the color we all love but don’t choose to live with.
Many of my clients won’t wear yellow. They claim it washes them out and makes them appear sickly. However, most everyone can wear yellow – it all depends on the shade, tint, or tone.
It also depends on how you wear the color. The colors that flatter you should be worn close to your face. Otherwise, you can use yellow in your pants, skirts, shoes, handbags, jewelry, etc.
Then I decided to show off my new army green sleeveless vest I just bought at Target. I decided to add orchid as a third color so it wasn’t too drab!
This might have looked even better with white denim on the bottom. By the way, this vest is only $27.99 and is very nice! I know I will wear it many times this fall (click here to see it).

I love how yellow has been paired with gray, tan, rose, bright green, orange, and of course blue. These outfits have inspired me to try different combinations. Many of the color combinations are fabulous!
