Have you noticed that pom-poms are everywhere this summer? Not only as accents to handbags and on shoes, but now even on clothing. We’ve got all sorts of dangling accents – fringe, tassels, and now pom-poms. It makes you smile when you see them – I heard someone refer to a pom-pom as a “tiny bauble of happiness”.
Pom-poms are not just a summer phenomenon, I’m also seeing them in the fall styles. First, let’s start at the beginning.
Where did the pom-pom come from?
The origin of the word is French and the official name is “pompon” ending in “n”. The more popular version of the word ends in “m” such as pompom, pom pom, or poms.
What do you think of first when someone mentions “pom-poms”? Maybe sporting events and cheerleading?
That’s where my initial thoughts go. Did you know cheerleading started in Great Britain during the 1860s but the first pom-pom was first used in the 1930s. They were first made of paper. They weren’t made of vinyl until 1965. In fact, I remember that the dye on the paper pom-poms would run if they got wet!
Pom-poms in fashion
Small pom-poms have appeared for centuries on hats. They first appeared on the Hungarian soldiers hats in the 18th century. The color of the pom-pom on the Roman Catholic biretta denotes the clergy’s rank – priest, bishop, or archbishop. The pom-pom on the top of Scottish military hats is called a “toorie”. Here is an interesting fact – the toorie has evolved into smaller pom-poms found on older golf cats and the button now found on all baseball caps.
Current trend as accessories
You can now find this little furry ball on anything. More traditionally on hats, scarves and children clothing. You can also use pom-poms as an accent for handbags, suitcases, phone cases – anywhere you want an accent. Here are some ways you can incorporate in this trend without spending a lot or overdoing it.
