Remember my recent post on Fashion Optical Illusion? I described how you can use fashion optical illusions to create body balance. If you didn’t read it then click here for the article or click here for how to wear horizontal stripes. In this post I’m focusing on vertical stripes.
Vertical lines create an illusion of height or length. See how the rectangle on the left looks elongated compared to the rectangle on the right.
Our eyes move quickly up and down over vertical lines creating an illusion of height or length. This is why you want to use a vertical line, such as a vertical stripe on the part of your body you want to slim or elongate. As with horizontal stripes, the size of the stripe matters. The smaller the vertical stripe the slimmer you will look. Compare the two images below.
If you’re petite, wear a vertical stripe dress or skirt to elongate your body; for instance, go for a vertical stripe maxi dress instead of a horizontal stripe. I’ve created an image below to illustrate.
The vertical stripes on the two right maxis make these outfits look longer and slimmer. I added a horizontal stripe of a different color to add a little interest.
And finally, combine vertical stripes and color block to add even more of a slender elongated look.
If you’re interested in any of the items I’ve featured in this outfit, you can see the set here.
Will you be wearing vertical stripes this spring?
