Most likely you’ve heard of the Rule of Three as it seems “three” is a key number in many disciplines such as design, photography, writing, science, and even survival!
Rule of Three Is Pervasive
Consider the Rule of Three principle in design – grouping three items together is more aesthetically pleasing than if you group two or four. The Rule of Three in writing believes that things that come in three are funnier, more effective, or more satisfying.
There is a reason for this – it all revolves around the way our brain sees, remembers, and processes information. Our brain works by recognizing and retaining patterns. Three is the smallest number of items that make a repeatable pattern, therefore, easier to remember and more pleasing to our eyes.
Rule of Three in Styling
There is also a Rule of Three used in styling. It goes like this –
Take a basic outfit, usually a top and bottom,
and add a third piece.
It’s as easy as that. Look at this quite basic outfit.
Now let’s see how I can take it from ordinary to more interesting.
Add a third piece, such as a belt –
Or add a cardigan or a vest like I’ve done here –
Or leave the belt on and add a 4th piece
such as a scarf to add even more interest!
Or why not use them all!
Your third piece could be
- a blazer, jacket or a coat,
- a vest, cardigan, sweater or
- an accessory such as a belt, scarf, hat, statement necklace, handbag, etc.
Right now the sleeveless vests or kimonos are on trend. These are perfect for adding to a simple t-shirt/jean outfit. The vest also adds vertical lines and helps camouflage any bumps around our stomachs – an added benefit!
Remembering the Rule of Three is an effortless way to add style to your outfits. Whatever you do – just have fun experimenting with your looks!
