Tomorrow, June 14th, is an important day for women. At a summit in Washington, D.C., Michelle Obama will launch the “United State of Women” – an initiative to address gender equality and work towards improving female lives.
Here is the launch video which was released last week.
The summit will focus on economic empowerment, health and wellness, educational opportunity, violence against women, entrepreneurship, leadership, and civic engagement. Although in-person attendance is maxed out, the summit will be available via livestream on the event’s website.
We’ve Come a Long Way But…
It’s amazing how much women’s lives have changed in my lifetime. I realize it more and more as I talk to my daughters about their careers compared to mine. But we have so far to go – just on the issue of equal pay. Today, the median wage of a woman working full-time in the United States is approximately $39,600—only 79 percent of a man’s median earnings of $50,400.
Here’s my pledge:
I’ve decided that my retirement is going to be spent helping build self-confidence in women. That is why My Effortless Style is based on the belief that self-confidence is the most attractive quality a woman can have. I meet so many women who lack confidence to assert themselves – this is an issue so near and dear to my heart as I struggled for years to confidently fit into a man’s world. I also want to do more – more than I’m doing now – to encourage girls to pursue a STEM career, especially in the area of computer technology, coding, or data analysis. Again, near and dear to my heart, as I started a 35 yr information technology career as a Fortran programmer!
What Can You Do?
