Think of your closet like your refrigerator. I know this may sound silly but, when you think about it, there are so many similarities. Here are 3.
My Refrigerator Is Full Of Food But I Can’t Find Anything To Eat
You open up your refrigerator that hasn’t been cleaned in a few weeks and it is messy with lots of half eaten items. You find some fruit on the bottom rack, then you see some more on the top rack. There are two milk jugs that are opened and half used. It is overwhelming. You close the door and order take-out!
Similarity to your closet:
My closet is full of clothes but I have nothing to wear!
Like you clean your refrigerator every few months, do the same for your closet. A good time to do this is at the beginning of a new season when you change out one season for the next. Make sure your closet only holds items you are going to wear, and it is neat and organized. Make it easy to see your clothes and you will wear them! If you’re searching through racks of clothes trying to find a garment it’s time to get rid of what is not working for you, clear the clutter so you can create amazing outfits.
I Have Milk But the Date Is Past Due
I hate it when I reach for the milk and I find that the date is past “the use by” date. It usually occurs when I want a bowl of cereal! I take out the milk, look at the date, and smell it to find out if it has gone bad. Even though it may smell OK, I usually tell myself not to take a chance. Similarity to your closet:
I had a top for this outfit but it is stained, torn and no longer fits!
Make sure your closet contains only items that are clean, free of holes & tears, and fits your body shape now. It’s important to keep the contents of your closet fresh, get rid of items that are past their “use by date’”and restock with fresh items!
I Want To Make My Favorite Soup But I Don’t Have Jalapeño Peppers
I have a favorite recipe for a black bean soup that I make in the crockpot. Here’s the recipe. The other day I was going to make the soup only to find that I had everything except the jalapeño peppers. I was frustrated. Why? Because the peppers make the soup so special! It was a very cold and snowy day and this soup would have been perfect but, instead, I had to figure out something different to have that night for dinner. Similarity to my closet:
I want to wear this outfit but I have no accessories to wear it with!
Just like the jalapeño peppers add the “oomph” to my soup, Accessories can take your outfit from just “ok” to “stylish.” This means you need to consider your accessories as part of your “wardrobe”. Why? Because they are an incredibly powerful tool to change up your outfit without changing clothes. You don’t need a huge wardrobe. Rather, use accessories to dress up or dress down an outfit.
These are only 3 ways your closet is similar to your refrigerator. Can you think of more?
